Viridarium

Viridarium, a 2023 fragrance from the Italian house Maria Candida Gentile, composed by the founder herself, is a walk through a planted garden rendered in woods: everyone who describes it calls it woody, most also say green and citrus, and about a third add floral and resinous.

The opening is bright and herbal, with mandarin and bergamot giving a zesty lift, a green accord adding crushed-leaf sharpness and clary sage a slightly bitter, tea-like note. The heart is unusual and quietly sweet: poppy and carnation give a soft, peppery floral tone, chamomile and herbal notes keep it rustic, and beeswax and dates lend a honeyed, waxy warmth. The base is a conifer wood: fir, cypress and elm, with frankincense adding a dry, resinous, church-like glow.

It is worn by anyone. The green-wood character suits spring and autumn days outdoors, and a wearer who prefers natural, unhurried scents to sweet or loud ones.
