Oud de Carthage, released by Boucheron in 2017, was composed by Dominique Ropion and Claire Liégent. Everyone who describes it calls it gourmand, which is unusual for an oud; about half also find it woody, resinous, amber or leather. The result reads as a sweet, dark oriental rather than a raw oud.
The notes are given as a single list. Honey brings a thick, slightly animalic sweetness that gives the fragrance its gourmand reputation. Agarwood (oud) and leather supply the dark, smoky, skin-like depth, and incense adds a dry, resinous smokiness. Labdanum contributes a warm, ambery resin, and tonka bean rounds everything off with a soft almond-vanilla sweetness.
It is worn by anyone. A honeyed oud of this density is best suited to cold weather and to evenings, and it is likely to appeal to anyone who enjoys sweet, smoky, resinous fragrances and does not mind a noticeable presence.
