Vetiris

Vetiris, composed by Delphine Thierry for Lubin in 2017, puts vetiver and iris together, as the name says, and wraps them in spice. Everyone who describes it calls it spicy, about half add citrus, and a third mention green, woody and floral.

The opening is sharp and citrus-green: lemon, lime and bergamot, with petitgrain and neroli adding the bitter-leaf and orange-flower freshness. Clary sage brings a herbal, slightly tea-like note. The spice is generous: black pepper and pepper for a dry tingle, cardamom cool and aromatic, nutmeg and clove warmer and sweeter. Iris gives the heart a cool, powdery softness. The base is vetiver, grassy, rooty and faintly smoky, with cypress adding a dry, resinous green wood.

It is worn by anyone. The peppery, rooty character suits spring and autumn and daytime wear, and a person who likes vetiver but wants it lifted with citrus and softened with iris rather than left stark.
