Gula

Gula from the British house Memoize London, released in 2018, is a woody, musky citrus with a herbal, spiced heart. People describe it as woody, musky and citrusy in equal measure, and about half also find it spicy, green or floral.

Sweet orange opens it with a juicy, slightly candied brightness, and red thyme immediately adds a savoury, herbal, slightly medicinal edge that makes it more interesting than a plain citrus. Cloves bring a warm, spicy depth, galbanum a sharp, bitter green snap, and lavender a clean, aromatic freshness. Jasmine softens the middle with a hint of flowers. The base is warm and smooth, with vanilla adding sweetness, sandalwood and vetiver dry, earthy woodiness, and black musk a darker, slightly animalic warmth that lasts.

Gula is worn by anyone. The herbal citrus top suits warmer days, while the spiced musky base carries it into evening, and it should appeal to someone who wants a citrus with depth and a savoury twist.
