Soir de Lune by Sisley, released in 2006 and composed by Dominique Ropion, is a rich, spiced floral in the chypre tradition. Everyone describes it as floral, more than half add spicy and citrus, and a good share find it sweet or woody.
The opening is citrus with spice: bergamot, lemon and mandarin against coriander, nutmeg and pepper oil, so it feels warm from the first minute. The heart is a full bouquet led by May rose and jasmine, with iris adding powder, mimosa a soft honeyed fluffiness and peach a ripe sweetness. The base is where the chypre character sits: oakmoss and patchouli give it a dark, earthy, slightly bitter floor, honey adds a thick sweetness and sandalwood and musk smooth it out.
Nearly half of wearers call it eternal and a third long lasting, and sillage is strong for most, so it is a fragrance with real presence. Autumn and winter are the seasons it is voted for, and it leans towards night. It suits evening wear in cold weather and someone who likes a grand, old-style floral.
