Secret Woods

Secret Woods by CoSTUME NATIONAL, composed by Julien Rasquinet in 2021, is a dry, spiced woody masculine. Woodiness is what everyone agrees on; about half also describe it as spicy and citrusy, and a quarter notice amber and leather.

Grapefruit and bergamot open it, bright and bitter, with juniper berries adding a gin-like, piney sharpness. Nutmeg and saffron supply the spice, the nutmeg warm and woody, the saffron dry and faintly leathery. The heart and base are a stack of dry materials: Haitian vetiver and vetiver for a smoky, grassy earthiness, patchouli for a darker depth, sandalwood for a creamy smoothness, leather for a smooth, worn-in richness and styrax for a sweet, balsamic, slightly smoky resin that warms the finish.

It reads as a confident, versatile woody scent that is fresh at the start and warm and leathery later, suited to someone who likes vetiver and spice and wants a fragrance that works from a working day into an evening out.
