Classic by Van Gils, a Dutch house, dates from 1988 and was composed by Pierre Wargnye. It is a citrus scent for men with a woody side that most people who describe it notice, a spicy side that a sizeable minority mention, and a touch of amber picked out by a few.

Lemon, orange and bergamot give the opening a bright, zesty lift, and verbena and lemon verbena extend that citrus freshness with a greener, more herbal quality. Coriander and cardamom bring a dry, aromatic spice, and thyme adds a savoury, herbal note that gives the scent its slightly old-school, cologne-like character. The base is grounded by cedar and vetiver, both dry and earthy, with patchouli adding depth and amber a quiet warmth.

It is a tidy, well-mannered fragrance in the traditional citrus-and-herbs style, suited to daytime wear and to people who like a fresh, unfussy scent with a little spice and a clear vintage character.
