Hermessence Oud Alezan from the French house Hermès, composed by Christine Nagel in 2024, is a pared-back woody oud. Wood is what everyone notices, and about half also describe it as fresh and floral.
The composition rests on two materials. Agarwood provides the woody core, dark, resinous and slightly animalic, but handled with restraint rather than full force. Against it sit rose and rose water: the rose gives a soft, slightly jammy floral warmth, while the rose water adds a cool, dewy, almost transparent freshness that lifts the oud and explains why people find the scent fresh as well as woody.
It is worn by anyone and has the quiet, polished character of a scent for someone who wants oud without heaviness, suited to evenings and cooler weather but light enough for daytime too.
