Amarige is a big, lush white floral from Givenchy, released in 1991 and composed by Dominique Ropion. Everyone describes it as floral; just under half also call it gourmand, about a third woody, with musky, amber and citrus shades noted by a minority.

The opening is fruity and generous, with mandarin, peach and plum over violet and orange blossom, sweet and a little powdery. The heart is a dense bouquet dominated by tuberose and gardenia, two creamy, heady white flowers, softened by mimosa and ylang-ylang and brightened with red berries and blackcurrant. The base is warm and enveloping, as vanilla, tonka bean and amber give a sweet, resinous depth and sandalwood with cedar add a smooth wood.

Most wearers find it long lasting, some calling it eternal, and the trail is strong to enormous. It is voted for autumn and spring, with day slightly ahead of night. This is a scent for someone comfortable with presence, best applied sparingly and suited to occasions rather than a crowded office.
