Private Black

Private Black is a hot, spicy oud marketed for men from the French brand Saint Hilaire, released in 2018. Spicy is how everyone describes it, and a quarter also notice wood, musk, amber or citrus, which fits a scent in which the spices lead and everything else supports them.

Bergamot opens it with a brief, bright citrus before the heat arrives: cinnamon brings a sweet, fiery warmth, saffron a dry, leathery, slightly metallic edge, and a general blend of spices fills in around them so the start feels like a warm spice market rather than a single note. Agarwood is the heart, dark, resinous and faintly medicinal, and it gives the spices a deep, woody frame. The base is amber and musk, the amber warm and slightly sweet, the musk soft and skin-like, so the finish is smooth rather than harsh.

It is a cold-weather, evening scent for men who like cinnamon and saffron over oud and want warmth without much sweetness.
