Black Noir is a dark, sweet wood from Mancera, composed by Pierre Montale and released in 2023. Wood is the impression everyone shares; most also find it sweet, and about a third describe it as spicy, floral, aromatic or leathery.
It opens with pink pepper and black leather, a bright peppery sparkle over a smoky, tarry hide note. The heart pairs Cambodian oud and tobacco, resinous and leafy, with patchouli for earth and tiare flower adding a creamy, slightly coconut-like floral softness that keeps the darkness from being severe. The base is where the sweetness comes through: tonka bean and vanilla give a warm, hay-like creaminess, Haitian vetiver a dry, smoky counterpoint, and ambergris a salty, skin-like finish.
Black Noir is worn by anyone. By character it is a cool-weather and evening fragrance, rich and a little theatrical, and it suits people who like leather and oud softened with vanilla and tobacco.
