Basil gives the opening a green, herbal brightness, with nutmeg adding a dry, warm spice. Violet brings a soft, slightly powdery sweetness to the heart, an unexpected touch that keeps the composition from feeling purely rugged. Elemi adds a lemony, resinous note that bridges to the base. There, labdanum provides a thick, ambery resin, leather a smoky depth, cedar a dry wood, patchouli an earthy grip and tonka bean a sweet, almond-like warmth that rounds off the whole.
The weight of resin, leather and tonka points to autumn and winter, evenings and smart occasions rather than summer days. It suits men who like warm, slightly sweet woody scents with a leather edge and who do not mind being noticed.
