Hugo Reversed

Hugo Reversed, released by Hugo Boss in 2018, is a stripped-back citrus for men. Everyone describes it as citrusy; about half also find it woody and aromatic. It is a short, direct composition with nothing to hide behind.

Grapefruit and Calabrian bergamot open it, sharp and slightly bitter, the sort of brightness that feels like cold water. Rosemary follows in the heart, adding a dry, herbal, faintly camphorous freshness that keeps the citrus from turning sweet. Haitian vetiver forms the base, smoky, grassy and clean, giving the scent what little weight it has. There is nothing sweet, creamy or warm anywhere in it.

Most wearers report moderate longevity and a moderate to close trail, with a quarter finding it weak, which is in character for a scent this fresh. It is voted strongly for daytime and almost entirely for summer and spring. It suits someone who wants an uncomplicated, cooling citrus for hot days and does not mind reapplying.
