EVY

EVY from the Romanian house Calaj, released in 2023, is a strange, sweet gourmand with a leathery, animalic undertone. Gourmand is the word everyone uses for it; just over half also find it floral, about four in ten spicy, ambery or leathery, and a smaller group citrusy.

Bubble gum, honey and pineapple make a bright, candied, almost childish opening, and blood orange adds a juicy, slightly bitter edge. Almond and bitter almond bring a marzipan sweetness, pimento and red pepper a warm, surprising heat. The flowers are soft and powdery: violet, rose, cyclamen and magnolia. Underneath, things turn darker: leather, castoreum and oakmoss add a smoky, animalic, mossy depth, metallic notes a cold edge, and patchouli an earthy foundation. Vanilla, Peru balsam, amber and musk soften the base into a warm, resinous finish.
