Musk to Musk

Musk to Musk, released by Montale in 2010 and composed by Pierre Montale, is first and foremost a woody fragrance. Everyone who describes it uses the word woody; about a quarter add spicy, musky or amber, so the musk of the name is a supporting player, not the lead.

The notes are listed without a pyramid. Teak wood and a general woody backbone give it a dry, slightly smoky structure, and agarwood (oud) adds the dark, leathery depth associated with the house. Nutmeg brings a warm, slightly peppery spice that keeps the wood from feeling flat. Amber adds warmth and a resinous softness, and musk rounds off the edges so the finish sits close to the skin rather than rasping.
