Black Vanilla from Mancera, composed by Pierre Montale and released in 2017, is a sweet, dessert-like fragrance with a clear floral side. Nearly everyone describes it as gourmand, and most also find it floral; a smaller group notes a musky softness and a citrus brightness in the opening.

It opens with white peach and black currant, juicy and a little tart, with a coconut creaminess and a squeeze of Calabrian bergamot keeping it from being too thick. The heart is a proper bouquet: Bulgarian rose, violet and Egyptian jasmine, which add a powdery, slightly romantic quality to all that fruit. Underneath, Madagascar vanilla and white musk take over, warm and smooth, and this is where the scent settles for most of its life.

Most wearers report that it lasts long and projects strongly, so a little goes a long way. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter, and splits almost evenly between day and night. Worn by anyone, it suits those who want a vanilla that is rich but not purely sugary.
