Interlude Black Iris, from Amouage in 2020 and composed by Pierre Negrin, is a dark, resinous take on iris. Woods lead, resin is strong, and there are lighter green, floral, aromatic and citrus touches.

It opens with rosemary for a fresh, herbal sharpness, bergamot for a citrus lift and violet leaf for a crisp green note. The heart is rich and smoky: myrrh, labdanum and frankincense bring a resinous, incense-like warmth, vanilla and amber a soft sweetness, and orris root a cool, powdery, slightly earthy elegance. The base is dark and woody, with oud and leather for depth, patchouli for earthiness, and cedar and sandalwood for structure.

Nearly all wearers say it lasts a very long time, and most describe the sillage as strong, with some calling it enormous. It is voted for winter and autumn and is mainly an evening scent. It suits formal cold-weather evenings and anyone who likes powerful, smoky iris. It is worn by anyone.
