Oud Imperial, from Perris Monte Carlo in 2012, was composed by Luca Maffei. Woody is the word everyone uses; a third also find it spicy, and a minority notice floral, resinous and ambery sides.
The opening is caraway and jasmine, an unusual pairing of a warm, slightly medicinal seed spice with a rich white flower. The heart is agarwood with saffron and incense, the oud dark and resinous, the saffron adding a leathery warmth and the incense dry smoke, with patchouli for earth. The base of labdanum, sandalwood, blackwood, cedar and vetiver is deep and dry, a layered woody floor with a resinous, slightly sweet undertone from the labdanum.
Most people report long-lasting to near-permanent wear, and the projection is strong for most. It is voted for winter and autumn and leans towards the evening. Worn by anyone, it suits cold nights and people who want a serious, woody oud with spice and smoke rather than a sweet or floral one.
