Power Ballad from the French house Room 1015, composed by Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Amélie Bourgeois and released in 2016, is a spicy, minty citrus. Spicy is the word everyone uses for it; three quarters also find it citrusy, about half woody, and a quarter resinous or aromatic.
Grapefruit, lime and bergamot give a sharp, bitter-bright opening, and peppermint and mint add a cold, tingling freshness that makes it feel almost electric. The spices are unusual: coriander for a lemony, slightly soapy warmth, anise for a sweet liquorice edge, cumin for a dry, earthy, faintly sweaty depth, and juniper for a gin-like, resinous bite. Poplar buds bring a sticky, balsamic green note. The base of cedar, vetiver and labdanum turns it drier and warmer, with the labdanum adding a soft, resinous amber.
Power Ballad is worn by anyone. The fresh, cooling top suits warm weather, while the spiced base carries it into evenings, and it should appeal to someone who wants a citrus with real bite and a few surprises.
