Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant, from 1996 and composed by Dominique Ropion, is a dense, spicy oriental scent. Spice dominates, with sweetness and florals at about half that strength, and lighter musky, amber and citrus touches.

The opening is bold: cumin brings a warm, slightly sweaty spice, cloves a deep, warming note and mandarin orange a little brightness. The heart is rich and unusual, with heliotrope and mango for a creamy, fruity sweetness, licorice for an aniseed-like accent, cardamom and caraway for more spice, and ylang-ylang and gardenia for a heady floral body. The base is warm and resinous, with amber, patchouli and vanilla giving a sweet, earthy, enveloping finish.

Performance is outstanding by most reports: half say it lasts far beyond a day, and the sillage is strong or enormous. It is voted for winter and autumn and is worn both day and night. Marketed for women, it suits anyone who loves powerful, spice-heavy compositions, ideally applied sparingly.
