Citrus and wood define Hugo Dark Blue, created for Hugo Boss in 1999 by Alain Astori and Béatrice Piquet. About half of people also notice spice, and a minority mention sweetness, a floral touch and an aromatic side.

The opening is a fresh burst of lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit, sharpened by ginger's zesty heat. The heart turns darker and more aromatic: mahogany brings a smooth, polished woodiness, cypress a resinous green, and cardamom and sage a cool, herbal spice. In the base, patchouli, vanilla, benzoin and vetiver create a warm, slightly sweet and earthy finish that softens the citrus.

Most wearers report moderate longevity, with some finding it weak, and a moderate trail that stays polite. It is voted for spring ahead of autumn and worn by day and night in almost equal measure. That makes it a versatile scent for work and casual evenings, for men who like fresh citrus with a warm, woody depth.
