Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver, composed by Harry Fremont and released in 2009, is a clean, spiced take on vetiver for men. Wearers describe it as spicy, woody and floral in equal measure, with about half also calling it green, aromatic or citrus.
The opening is bright and slightly bitter, with grapefruit and sage over a soft, soapy orange blossom. The heart warms up with nutmeg and pimento, which add a dry, peppery spice, and orris root, which gives a cool, powdery smoothness. In the base, vetiver takes over with its grassy, smoky, slightly earthy character, backed by oakmoss, dry woods and a thin layer of amber that keeps the drydown from being austere.
Most people find the longevity moderate, with about a third calling it long lasting, and sillage is moderate to intimate, so it stays close and polished. It is voted mostly for daytime and for spring and summer, which places it as a well-mannered office or daytime scent for someone who likes freshness with a bit of spice.
