Femme Rochas dates from 1944 and was composed by Edmond Roudnitska, which makes it one of the older classics still around. It is a rich floral, with a strong fruity sweetness and supporting spice, wood and citrus.
The opening is ripe and warm: plum, peach and apricot give a soft, almost jammy fruitiness, lemon and bergamot add a little light, and cinnamon and rosewood bring spice and polish. The heart is a full bouquet of rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and iris, made spicier by carnation and cloves, with a herbal touch of rosemary. In the base, oakmoss gives the dry, mossy depth of a traditional chypre, while amber, benzoin and vanilla add warmth, and leather, patchouli and musk a sensual, slightly animalic finish.
Most wearers report it as long lasting, with a moderate to strong sillage. It is voted for winter and autumn and favours evening wear. Marketed for women, it suits formal evenings and anyone who loves vintage-style, opulent fruity chypres.
