Byzance is a grand, spiced floral from Rochas, created in 1987 by Alberto Morillas and Nicolas Mamounas. Floral is the word everyone reaches for; a sizeable minority also call it spicy and woody, and fewer find it musky, citrusy or fresh.

The opening is busy in the manner of its decade: mandarin orange for brightness, aldehydes for sparkle, and carnation and cardamom for a peppery warmth. The heart is an opulent bouquet of tuberose, Turkish rose and jasmine, with anise adding a faint liquorice twist. The base is warm and sweet, vanilla and heliotrope over sandalwood and musk.

Wearers report it lasting a long time, and more than a third call it near permanent; the sillage is strong for most. Winter and autumn take the seasonal votes and it is mostly worn at night. This is a fragrance for cold evenings and formal occasions, best applied sparingly, and one that suits someone who enjoys the full-bodied perfumes of the late eighties.

Byzance — unisex fragrance by Rochas (released 1987). Top notes: Aldehydes, Spices, Carnation, Cardamom, Basil, Mandarin Orange, Lemon, Green Notes. Heart notes: Tuberose, Ylang-Ylang, Turkish Rose, Jasmine, Orris Root, Anise, Lily-of-the-Valley. Base notes: Sandalwood, Heliotrope, Amber, Musk, Vanilla, Cedar, Patchouli. — Parfica open fragrance database
