Olifant

Olifant from the Italian house Olfattology, released in 2022, is a smoky leather amber. People describe it as woody, ambery and leathery in equal measure, and about half also find it gourmand.

Fruity notes and cognac give the opening a dark, boozy, slightly sweet richness. Leather is the centre of the composition, smooth and warm, and it is surrounded by smoke: incense for a dry, church-like resin, birch for a tarry, campfire quality, and smoke itself for an open-fire depth. Guaiac wood adds a warm, slightly sweet, smoky woodiness, and vetiver a rooty, earthy edge. Amber underpins everything with a soft, resinous warmth that keeps the smoke from feeling harsh.

Olifant is worn by anyone. Its dark, smoky character suits autumn and winter and evening wear, and it should appeal to someone who enjoys leather and birch tar and wants them softened by cognac and amber.
