Dark Vanilla, released by Montale in 2020, is a vanilla built on oud and leather rather than sugar. People describe it as woody above all, with spicy, gourmand, amber and leathery facets each noted by about a third.
It opens with spices, warm and unspecified. The heart is the dark part: Cambodian oud for a resinous, slightly medicinal depth, leather for a smoky dryness, patchouli for earth and sandalwood for a creamy bridge to the base. Only then does the vanilla arrive, paired with amber, so the sweetness is thick and warm but always sitting on top of woods and smoke.
About half of wearers report that it lasts all day and most of the rest call it long lasting, while sillage is strong for half and enormous for a third.
