Vol de Nuit is a green, powdery floral for women, created by Jacques Guerlain for Guerlain in 1933. Floral is the word everyone uses; close to half also find it citrusy, and a smaller share notice green, woody or sweet sides.
The opening is a cluster of citrus, cut through by galbanum, a sharp, bitter, resinous green that gives the first minutes a cool, almost austere character, with narcissus adding a hay-like, faintly animalic floral note. The heart is a classic bouquet: rose and jasmine for richness, carnation for a clove-like spice, aldehydes for a sparkling lift, and iris for the soft, powdery, rooty quality that defines the scent. The base continues with orris root for more powder, sandalwood for a smooth wood, oakmoss for a dry, mossy depth, and musk for a warm, lasting finish.
Most wearers report moderate longevity and a moderate to intimate sillage. It is voted for autumn and winter and equally for night and day: a quiet, powdery classic for cool weather.
