Materia

Materia is a dry, woody amber with a cool, metallic edge, released by the Italian house of perfumer Angela Ciampagna in 2018. It is worn by anyone.

Metallic notes open it with a cold, steely, almost mineral brightness, an unusual start for a woody amber. The heart is resinous and warm: labdanum gives a rich, leathery amber, and resins a dry, balsamic depth. The base is woody notes, sandalwood and patchouli, the sandalwood creamy and smooth, the patchouli earthy and slightly dark, with musk adding a soft, skin-like finish that holds the whole close.

It suits autumn and winter and evening wear, though the metallic opening keeps it fresher than most ambers. Anyone who likes resinous woods with a modern, mineral twist should find it rewarding.
