Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium, an eau de parfum from 2014, is a sweet, warmly spiced scent built around coffee and vanilla. Most people describe it as sweet and spicy; around half also find it woody and powdery. It was composed by Nathalie Lorson, Olivier Cresp, Honorine Blanc and Marie Salamagne.

The opening pairs pink pepper with pear and orange blossom, so there is a short, bright, slightly fruity moment before the darker heart. Coffee is the defining note there, softened by almond and jasmine. In the base, vanilla brings the sweetness, patchouli adds depth and a touch of earth, and cedar lends a dry woody line that stops it from becoming a pure dessert.

Most wearers report moderate longevity, with a sizeable group finding it long lasting, and its projection is usually described as moderate. It is voted almost unanimously for night wear and for winter and autumn; only a minority reach for it during the day. It suits evenings out and colder months for someone who wants a sweet scent with an edge.
