Rhizome 01 is a four-note spice study from the Italian brand Rhizome, released in 2019. Spicy is the word everyone uses for it, and about half also find it woody and ambery.
Cumin and nutmeg make up the spice, and they are an earthy pair: cumin dry, warm and slightly sweaty, nutmeg warm, sweet and a little woody. Incense adds a dry, smoky, church-like resin that lifts the spices and gives them a ceremonial feel. Patchouli is the base, earthy, dark and faintly camphorous, and it gives the composition a woody floor to settle on. Because there are only four notes, the development is clear: the cumin softens over time, and the incense and patchouli come forward until the drydown is smoky, earthy and warm.
Rhizome 01 is worn by anyone. Its dry, spiced character suits autumn and winter and evenings, and it should appeal to someone who enjoys cumin and incense and is comfortable with a scent that has a distinct, slightly raw personality.
