Rouge Chaotique by Byredo, released in 2023, is a woody gourmand with spice, citrus and a dark oud base. It is intense and bold, mixing praline and plum with saffron and smoky woods.
The opening brings lemon and bergamot for a bright citrus edge and saffron for a leathery, metallic warmth. In the heart, oak adds a dry, slightly smoky woodiness, praline a sweet, toasted nuttiness and plum a ripe, jammy fruit note. The base of patchouli, agarwood (oud) and papyrus is earthy, smoky and dry.
Performance is formidable by most accounts: wearers split between eternal and long lasting, and the sillage is strong for about half and moderate for most of the rest. It is voted for winter and autumn and very clearly for the evening.
