Iris Rose, from the French house E. Coudray, released in 2012, is a powdery floral marketed to women. Everyone who describes it finds it woody and floral; around two thirds add gourmand and musky, and a minority find green and resinous touches.
Violet leaf gives the opening a cool, green, slightly metallic snap. Rose and iris then share the heart: the rose is soft and classic, while orris root supplies that dry, suede-like powder that iris is known for. Heliotrope adds a sweet, almondy haze. The base is where it warms up: labdanum brings a resinous, ambery depth, tonka bean and vanilla add sweetness, patchouli adds earth, and musk and woods hold the whole thing together.
The overall feeling is vintage and powdery rather than fresh, a cosmetics-bag sort of elegance. It suits cooler weather, daytime or evening, and will please anyone who likes iris done in a soft, warm and slightly sweet way.
