Bois d'Oud

Bois d'Oud is a dry woody oud from the French house Detaille, released in 2014. Woody is the word everyone uses for it; about a third also find it spicy, resinous, aromatic or citrusy.

Bergamot gives the opening a brief, bright lift, and saffron follows with a warm, dry, slightly leathery spice. Agarwood is the centre of the composition, dark, smoky and faintly medicinal, and cedar around it adds a dry, clean woodiness that keeps the oud from feeling heavy. Tobacco brings a warm, hay-like, slightly sweet depth, patchouli an earthy darkness, and labdanum a resinous, ambery warmth that softens the base and gives it staying power.

Bois d'Oud is worn by anyone. Its dry, warm, smoky character suits autumn and winter and evening wear, and it should appeal to someone who enjoys oud in a restrained, woody form rather than a sweet or rose-heavy one.
