Aoud Damascus

Aoud Damascus by Montale, composed by Pierre Montale in 2006, is a rose-and-oud fragrance in the house's familiar style. Floral is the description everyone agrees on, with about half also calling it woody, resinous and ambery.

Rose carries the composition, a full, rich rose rather than a dewy one, and agarwood gives it the dark, slightly medicinal woody depth that defines the pairing. Frankincense adds a dry, smoky resinous lift, safflower a faintly spicy, honeyed warmth, and gurjan balsam a soft, sweet resin that rounds off the base and gives the scent its amber side.

Though listed as feminine, the structure is the classic Middle Eastern rose-oud pairing, which many people of either sex enjoy. It is a scent for cooler weather and evenings, confident and close rather than light and airy. Anyone who already likes Montale's oud range will recognise the signature; those new to oud may find the rose makes this an approachable entry point.
