Opus VII – Reckless Leather

Opus VII, Reckless Leather, by Amouage, composed by Alberto Morillas and Pierre Negrin in 2013, is a dense, spiced, green-tinged leather worn by anyone. People describe it as spicy, woody and amber-like in equal measure, and a third also find it green, musky and leathery.

The opening is sharp and herbal: galbanum for a bitter, snapped-stem greenness, pink pepper and cardamom for a bright spice, and fenugreek for a strange, maple-like, slightly savoury sweetness. Nutmeg and costus add a warm, earthy, faintly animalic depth. The heart is leather and agarwood, smoky, resinous and dark, with cypriol adding an earthy, oud-like woodiness and frankincense and olibanum a cool, church-like smoke. The base is patchouli, sandalwood, ambergris, ambroxan and musk, earthy, creamy and salty in turn.

It reads as a challenging, cold-weather scent for someone who likes leather and incense raw and unsweetened, and who enjoys fragrances that take a few wearings to understand.
