Ciara is a powerful floral oriental from 1973, composed by Harry Cutler for Revlon. Floral is how everyone describes it; about half also find it sweet, woody, ambery and citrusy, and a quarter pick up leather.
Lemon, bergamot and neroli open it with a bright, slightly bitter citrus. The heart is rich and warm: jasmine and ylang-ylang bring a heady, creamy floral, and orris root a powdery smoothness. The base is where it earns its reputation, opoponax and incense adding a resinous, smoky sweetness, a soft vanilla warmth beneath, and leather a dark, dry edge that lingers for hours.
Wearers report it lasting a very long time, nearly a third calling it near permanent, and the sillage is strong or enormous for most, so a single spray is often enough. Autumn and winter take the seasonal votes and it is worn mostly at night. It is for cold evenings and anyone who likes the big, resinous perfumes of the seventies.
