L'eau d'Issey, composed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud for Issey Miyake in 1992, is a watery, transparent floral for women that helped define the clean style of its decade. Everyone who describes it calls it floral, about half add fresh, and a good share mention woody, with musky and amber sides noted by a minority.
It opens with lotus, freesia and cyclamen, dewy and cool, alongside melon and calone, the sea-breeze material that gives the scent its unmistakable aquatic feel, softened by rose and rose water. The heart is a bouquet of lily of the valley, lily and water peony, green, clean and slightly soapy, with carnation adding a faint spice. The base is warmer than people expect, with tuberose and osmanthus giving a creamy, apricot-tinged floral depth over cedar, sandalwood, musk and a little amber.
Wearers are split between moderate and long lasting, and sillage is moderate for most. It is voted overwhelmingly for daytime and for spring and summer, which makes it a fresh, clean scent for warm days and office wear.
