Catharsis is a spicy, woody floral from the Italian house Coreterno, released in 2019 and composed by Luca Maffei. Everyone who describes it calls it spicy, woody and floral in equal measure, and a third add leather. It is worn by anyone.
The notes are staged. Nutmeg and cloves open it with a dry, warm spice, brightened by neroli, which adds a clean, slightly bitter orange-blossom freshness. The heart is unusual: whisky brings a boozy, caramel-edged warmth, saffron a dry, leathery sweetness, and rose and ylang-ylang a rich, creamy floral layer against them. The base is dark and dry, with oud and guaiac wood for smoky, slightly tarry woods, cedar for a pencil-like sharpness, and leather to finish.
