Aromatics in Black

Aromatics in Black by Clinique, released in 2015 for women, is a dark, sweet floral with a resinous edge. People describe it as gourmand and floral in equal measure, with a third also finding it woody, resinous and citrus, so it has more depth than the typical fruity floral.

Bergamot, pink grapefruit and plum open it, a tart citrus brightness with ripe, jammy fruit behind it. The heart is a warm bouquet of neroli, osmanthus and jasmine, where the osmanthus adds an apricot-like, slightly leathery sweetness that gives the fragrance its character. The base is where the black in the name appears: myrrh brings a smoky, medicinal resin, tonka bean a soft, warm sweetness, and vetiver a dry, earthy finish.

Longevity divides wearers almost evenly between moderate and long lasting. Sillage is moderate for about half and strong for a good minority. It is voted equally for autumn and winter and splits evenly between day and night, so it suits cooler weather and evenings while remaining wearable through the day.
