Ex Voto, composed by Mark Buxton for the Austrian house WienerBlut in 2015, is a spicy, resinous woody fragrance with an incense glow. Spice is the leading impression for everyone who describes it, most also find it woody, and a minority mention resin and amber.

Pink pepper and nutmeg give the opening a bright, rosy fizz and a soft, warm spice. Mastic, a Mediterranean resin, adds a fresh, slightly piney and lemony note, and chamomile a calm, honeyed, apple-like herbal softness. Melilot, or sweet clover, brings a hay-like, almond and coumarin sweetness. The heart and base are resinous and woody: frankincense gives a dry, ceremonial smoke, guaiac wood a smoky smoothness, sandalwood a creamy depth and ambergris a soft, salty radiance.

Unisex in spirit, it suits people who enjoy contemplative incense fragrances with warmth and texture. Named after a votive offering, it suits autumn and winter, evenings and quiet, reflective occasions. Those who like spiced frankincense and guaiac compositions should find it calm and absorbing.
