Mastin from the Italian house V Canto, composed by Paolo Terenzi in 2015, is a woody floral oud. People describe it as woody and floral in equal measure, with a smaller group finding it spicy and a minority picking up musk and amber.
Saffron, cardamom, rose and agarwood open it all at once, so the dark, resinous wood and the warm, dry spice are there from the first moment, softened by rose. The heart is a rich bouquet of rose, jasmine and orange blossom, with orris root adding a cool, powdery touch and white wood and cedar a dry structure. The base returns to agarwood, joined by blackwood for depth, ambergris for a salty warmth, musk for smoothness and an unusual sand note for a dry, mineral finish.
It is worn by anyone and suits autumn and winter and the evening, for someone who likes oud with a full floral heart.
