Oud Imperial Extrait from Perris Monte Carlo, an extrait composed by Luca Maffei in 2015, is a deep, resinous woody oud. Everyone who describes it calls it woody, most also find it amber, and a minority notice resin and leather.
The composition is built almost entirely from woods and balsams. Agarwood gives the characteristic dark, slightly animalic and medicinal oud tone. Birch adds a smoky, tar-like edge that reads as leathery, while incense contributes a dry, church-like haze. Patchouli, vetiver and cypriol bring an earthy, rooty depth, and cedar and sandalwood a smoother woodiness. Labdanum, styrax and gurjun balsam pour a warm, sticky, ambery resin through the base, giving the whole a dense, glowing finish.
Unisex in spirit, it is aimed at people who already enjoy oud and want it rich, dark and uncompromising. The extrait concentration and the heavy resins point to cold weather, evenings and formal occasions, where a little goes a long way. Admirers of smoky, incense-laden oud compositions are its natural audience.
