Noctem Arabs is a dark woody fragrance from the Italian house Gritti, released in 2014 and worn by anyone. Everyone who describes it calls it woody; about a quarter each add musky, resinous, aromatic and amber.
It opens without fruit or citrus, straight onto Virginia cedar, tobacco and patchouli: the cedar is dry and clean, the tobacco sweet and hay-like, the patchouli earthy and dark. The heart deepens with agarwood (oud), smoky and resinous, balanced by sandalwood's creamy softness. The base of myrrh, amber and musk is warm and balsamic, with myrrh's bitter edge keeping the amber from turning too sweet.
This is a composition for cold weather and evenings, with little lightness and plenty of depth. It should suit people who already like oud and tobacco and want them in a smooth, wood-dominated blend rather than a sweet or spicy one.
