Kill The Lights from the Italian house Gritti, composed by Luca Gritti in 2023, is a smoky, tarry leather. Leather is what everyone notices, and about half also find it spicy and woody.

Juniper and pink pepper open it cool, dry and gently peppery, with artemisia adding a bitter, herbal edge. Davana brings a boozy, fruity, slightly bitter note to the heart, and hay a dry, sweet, sun-baked greenness. The base is dark: birch tar gives a smoky, tarry, campfire depth, leather a rough, worn-saddle quality, mastic a resinous, slightly green bitterness and guaiac wood a dry, smoky sweetness.

It is worn by anyone and is firmly a cold-weather evening scent, for someone who likes smoke, tar and leather without sweetness or flowers softening them. If you enjoy austere, bonfire-like scents, this sits squarely in that territory.
