Chantilly, from the house of Dana, dates from 1941 and smells like the era it comes from: a floral above all, which most people also find sweet, with spice and citrus noticed by a good share and a hint of resin and leather by a few.

Rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and orange blossom make up a full, old-fashioned bouquet, rich and slightly creamy rather than fresh. Bergamot, neroli and other citruses add brightness, and a light fruitiness softens the edges. The sweetness is the warm, powdery kind: vanilla, tonka bean and benzoin together give it a cosy, almost confectionery depth. Cloves add a dry, spicy bite, and oakmoss, sandalwood, leather and musk form a mossy, slightly animalic undertone that gives the scent its vintage weight.

A feminine fragrance with real history, it suits anyone who enjoys powdery, spiced florals in the traditional style, and it carries the character of a dressed-up evening rather than a casual morning.
