Ambre Sultan is a herbal amber from Serge Lutens, composed by Christopher Sheldrake and released in 1993 for anyone to wear. Everyone who describes it finds it green, woody, resinous and ambery; about half also call it spicy and sweet.
The notes are listed without stages, but the design is distinctive. Bay leaf, oregano, myrtle and coriander give it a dry, savoury, almost culinary herbal edge, with angelica adding a green, slightly earthy bitterness. That herb garden sits on top of a classic amber base: benzoin and myrrh for resin, vanilla for sweetness, sandalwood and patchouli for creamy, earthy wood. The herbs keep the amber from being purely sweet, and the amber keeps the herbs from being purely sharp.
Half of wearers find it long lasting and a third moderate. Projection is reported as moderate by most people, with a quarter finding it strong. It is voted for autumn and winter, and more for night than day, which makes it a cold-weather evening amber for someone who likes resin with a herbal, slightly bitter twist.
