Sichuan pepper sets it off with a tingling, citrusy spice that is brighter and more electric than black pepper. Fir and balsam fir follow with a resinous, evergreen freshness, the smell of conifer needles and sap, slightly sweet and balsamic. Cedar forms the base, dry and clean, and together with the balsam gives a warm, ambery glow as it settles.
