Noir Patchouli from Histoires de Parfums, a French house, dates from 2000 and was composed by Gérald Ghislain and Sylvie Jourdet. It is a dry, spicy woody scent built around patchouli from start to finish, worn by anyone, with a minority also finding it sweet, musky, floral and leathery.

Patchouli appears at every stage. It opens alongside cardamom and coriander, so the first impression is spicy and slightly green rather than earthy. In the heart it is joined by juniper berries, which bring a cool, gin-like sharpness, and a soft floral layer that smooths the edges. The base is patchouli again with musk, leather and vanilla, which turns it darker and warmer with a faint sweetness under the leather.

Most wearers find it long lasting, and sillage is split evenly between strong and moderate, so it carries. Autumn and winter lead the votes, as does the evening. It suits someone who likes patchouli as the main event rather than as a background note.
