A floral centred on iris, Hiris was composed for Hermès in 1999 by Olivia Giacobetti. Floral is the character everyone names; more than half also call it gourmand, and a minority find spicy, woody or amber facets.
Iris appears from the first moment alongside coriander, carnation and a hint of amber, so the opening is cool, powdery and faintly peppery rather than sweet. The heart keeps iris at the centre and softens it with rose and neroli, adding a gentle petal brightness. The base is where the gourmand side arrives: vanilla and honey bring a quiet sweetness, almond tree a milky nuttiness, and cedar a dry woody frame that stops it becoming dessert-like.
Most people find the longevity moderate and the sillage moderate to intimate, so it stays close to the skin. It is voted for spring first and autumn second, and firmly for daytime, which suits a soft, understated scent that is easy to wear in company.
