Devil Tender, created by Nadège Le Garlantezec for Ex Nihilo in 2016, is a sweet, woody rose for women. Everyone who describes it calls it sweet, woody and floral in the same breath; most also find citrus, and about a third pick up spice and musk.
The notes are listed without stages. Pink grapefruit and bergamot open things on a tart, bright note, with pink pepper adding a little sparkle. The rose at the centre is soft rather than dark: rose petals, rose water and Bulgarian rose together give a fresh, slightly dewy effect, sweetened by peach and the almondy powder of heliotrope. Tea adds a dry, gentle bitterness. The base is smooth: sandalwood and white cedar for creamy wood, suede for a soft leathery touch, and vanilla for warmth.
By character it is a versatile fragrance, soft enough for the day and warm enough for the evening. It suits someone who wants a modern rose that leans sweet and comfortable rather than sharp or old-fashioned.
